Origin of the basenji

There is evidence of the existence of this type of dog since the Egyptian civilization, more than 5000 years ago, although in reality the basenji was born and developed in Africa. It was in the areas of Sudan and Congo that the first specimens emerged. The truth is that the natives used these dogs as helpers in hunting and they were very good at stalking, collecting and leading prey to the traps that their masters set.

It is incredible, but the Basenji is one of the few dog breeds that have been kept semi-pure and with hardly any changes that differ from the original furry ones.

Did you know that this dog cannot bark? Yes, it is one of the peculiarities that characterizes it. But do not be fooled, it is capable of emitting a sound, or what is the same, a kind of song that serves to communicate. Another curiosity about this dog is that its females have only one heat per year, but it lasts a whole month.

On the other hand, they were very useful dogs for the inhabitants of the villages, since those animals that were not useful for hunting had less luck and they used them as food to survive. This was the only way in which man intervened, eliminating the less skilled dogs and thus obtaining basenjis with incredible dexterity for their work.

Your arrival in Europe

The first European breeder of this class of dogs was Olivia Burn, who in 1937 exhibited her Basenji puppies for the first time with whom she created a real revolution at the international Crufts championship. In this way, he catapulted these furry dogs to fame, which became very popular in the United Kingdom. Consequently, they began to be exported all over the world and the breed managed to standardize.

Basenji character

What behavior does this dog have?

The truth is that it has a way of being quite characteristic, with a point of independence. He likes to be always busy, alert and is a very active animal. Consequently, he will need you to provide him with something to keep himself entertained with or else he will figure out how to do it himself. Be careful because he is a specialist in putting the first thing he catches in his mouth!

First of all, we recommend chewing toys, as well as bones that will help you maintain your oral health and prevent the excessive accumulation of tartar.

The basenji and his family

It can be a good companion animal, however, to achieve it, you have to dedicate time and even train it correctly to obtain better results. Another essential point is that of socialization, so that you can get used to all kinds of situations from a young age. As for his relationship with people who are not from his closest environment, he may be reserved at first but if you work well with him from a puppy this is something that you can avoid in your Basenji once he is an adult. However, with his family he is a close, good and very affectionate animal. In the same way, children will enjoy and share games as long as they are clear that animals must be treated with respect and tolerance.

Although he has a very good relationship with humans, not so much with animals. If you have any more at home, you should know that they can take a dominant attitude, although there are cases in which they can coexist without problems because they become indifferent towards them.

Keeping your Basenji healthy and energetic

Being a wild and restless dog, it will need to exercise, so it will love going for a walk every day. In contrast to this, it is perfectly adapted to living in the city and inside the house you will have no problem. He also enjoys being very warm, which is a plus to take into account in the winter. He loves to snuggle in his bed!

Is there a typical basenji disease?

Generally it is a very healthy furry with a high longevity. However, there are some typical pathologies of the breed:

  • Fanconi syndrome, which affects the kidneys.
  • Eye diseases, such as progressive retinal atrophy.
  • Intestinal problems.
  • Very sensitive skin.

The hygiene of this type of dog

It is a very conscious dog with its own hygiene. What’s more, many compare it to a cat for its daily grooming routines! Basically, to keep your hair and skin in an enviable state, only one or two brushings a week and a bath when dirty will suffice. We especially advise you to use a shampoo for delicate skin.

What does the basenji eat and what is the best diet for this breed?

A good diet from a puppy will be the basis on which your dog’s health is sustained once he is an adult. To choose the best diet you should always base yourself on these points:

  • Your dog’s age.
  • Physiological state.
  • Specific needs.

Finally, get your best friend used to eating his feed from day one and reward him with dental snacks to help him keep his teeth healthy. You know that Basenji loves to nibble!
