How to teach a cat

Studies carried out on feline behavior show that part of psychomotor development begins before birth and has an important genetic component, especially with regard to socialization with man. However, it is essential to know how to teach a cat in the period that goes up to 6 months of age. It is also possible to achieve an apprenticeship in an adult cat, but this will depend on its temperament and the teaching skills of its master.

In the kitten, behavior has three fundamental pillars: learning, mother’s education and socialization.

The learning

The apprenticeship includes everything that the owners teach it, from limiting access, for example, above the table, to the use of the litter tray. We can teach a cat some rules for its education but, the mother he will be the one who teaches him grooming, hunting, relating to his brothers and other instinctive behaviors. If she is a domestic cat it will also teach her not to fear people and this will help a lot to correct socialization. This phenomenon is early and is essential for the good development of the kitten and for its emotional balance.

Socialization

It develops between the 2nd and 7th week of life and sometimes even a little later. During this period a medium with abundant and varied sources of stimulation appropriate ones that awaken your intelligence. It is convenient for the kitten to have access to toys such as small balls, paper bags, cardboard boxes, pieces of wood to climb, large elements to hide inside them, for at least one hour per day; An environment with a variety of sounds is also good (television, games and children’s screams, music, etc). The objective of this stimulation is to teach the cat a harmonious development of behavior and allow it to adapt to all circumstances. Kittens raised in this way have a very marked exploratory behavior.

How to teach a cat to interact with people and other animals

Contact and games between kittens are essential for their development, as well as the relationship with members of other “friendly” species such as dogs, rabbits, etc. The nature and strength of the attachment that will be created between the owner and his cat will largely depend on this interspecies socialization. It is about different people manipulate and talk daily during the socialization period, between 5 and 40 minutes per day, which will generate an easy-tempered cat.

If you want to get the kitten to become attached to a single master, then it will have to make contact with only one or two people. In the same way it is achieved familiarity with other species, since at older ages this becomes much more difficult.

How to teach a cat to get along with children

From the cat’s point of view, children are totally different from adults, almost as if they were another species. They are louder, unpredictable, clumsy with their hands, capable of pulling the cat’s tail, whiskers or hair at the slightest carelessness. Therefore, to teach a cat to have a good relationship with young children you have to socialize you directly with them. Sometimes it is difficult for the cat to accept them, so it is necessary to familiarize them from the first weeks of life by allowing them to be in contact with young children from an early age. This must be done carefully, always under adult supervision so that the experience is not traumatic and for only a few minutes at first, until the cat is used to it.

Finally, to complete the process of socialization and teaching a cat, you must make sure that the first days at home result in a completely pleasant experience: without shocks, without abuse, taking care that he has time and freedom to explore his new territory without fear. It is important if there is another animal in the house (and the same goes for small children) that they get to know each other little by little and under supervision, this way they will avoid having a bad moment that is difficult for them to overcome.
