Having a cat in an apartment or a house without a garden means adapting a little space for it. You will need a scraper, feeders and, above all, a litter box in which to relieve yourself. There are also different types of cat litter, and you will have to choose based on the needs of your pet.

The cat litter tray, or litter box

The litter box, or your cat’s tray, is his bathroom, where he relieves himself, instead of leaving them in the corners of the house. Cats are very much theirs, and they need privacy to go to the bathroom. And not just any tray and sand for cats. We will start by talking about which tray they need and which is the best litter for each one.

There are four factors to take into account when preparing your cat’s litter box:

  1. Size
  2. Model
  3. Location
  4. Sand

When choosing the perfect tray for your cat you will have to take into account the size so that it can dig, the different models that exist, where you are going to place it at home and what sand for cats you are going to use.

The cat needs a tray that it can move in and that has depth to dig. It doesn’t have to be such a large tray that it is cumbersome. But you do have to have considerable space for the cat to feel comfortable.

There are also different types of trays for cats to relieve themselves. There are the most basic ones, which remind us a bit of the ones we use at airports. But there are sophisticated models of covered sandboxes, like a children’s playhouse, with its own door. And they have interesting advantages: the sand does not spread, the cat has privacy, and the odors are controlled. But if your cat is used to traditional trays, it is possible that when he comes across one of these models it will be strange to him and he does not want to use it. You can leave it a season without covering while it gets used to it.

To make toileting is not a problem, the tray must have a considerable amount of sand for cats in which to dig and bury the stools. But that the sand does not overflow the edges of the tray so that it does not come out when stirring it, for this there are anti-spill sandboxes. Nor should it be located in the area where the cat eats, because cats are very clean and do not eat in the same place where they relieve themselves. Put it in a discreet and private place, where there is privacy. If the litter box is in the hallway, the cat cannot relax while people walk freely.

Types of cat litter

You already have the tray ready, butwhat kind of litter is used for cats?

If this is the first time you have a cat at home, this question may arise. Maybe you have wondered if any sand or dirt is worth it, as if the animal were in the field. But in the pet section you will see that there are many types of sand for cats from which to choose. There is scented sand, binder, absorbent beads against humidity,… which one is appropriate?

Here you will have to trust your cat. Cats have a lot of personality and they know what they like.

There are these types of cat litter:

  • Conventional cat litter

The easiest to find and the cheapest. But it has its drawbacks. And this sand has very few uses, so in the long run you end up investing a large amount of money. When the cat has used it you will have to empty the entire box, because it also gives off an unpleasant smell after the feline’s visit.

The agglomerating sand has in its composition a clay mixture that makes the animal’s excrement compact. This makes it easy to separate them from the rest of the sand, scoop them up with a shovel and leave the rest of the clean sand in the box. Although due to this chemical composition, they give off a strange smell, and also generate dust and dirt in the area where the sandbox is.

  • Pearls, or sand with silica gel pearls

This sand is synthetic and fulfills its absorbent and binding function very well. It also changes color when the cat uses it, so we will know immediately if it is dirty and we have to change it. And since it does not give off odors, it lasts many days collecting the used parts and keeping them clean. But it has a drawback, and that is that many cats are reluctant to it and reject it. It is the most expensive and exclusive litter on the market, but it will depend on the cat if it will be the one you use at home or not.
